A Girl's Point of View Book Club: High School

The club was started 6 years ago at Vinalhaven School Library at the request of a high school girl who wanted an Oprah-like book club.  Plans were made, money was raised, books were chosen and almost half the girls in the high school signed up for the book club that year!  The girls helped to choose the books we read.  They really wanted to read about girls who were facing some of the same issues that they were.  Today we have 2 girls' book clubs at our school and the club is so successful that Mainely Girls, an organization dedicated to the education and support of teenage girls in Maine, took our idea statewide!  There are now over 1000 girls and adult facilitators involved in A Girls' Point of View across Maine.

The club chooses books from a list that Mainely Girls sends out to the schools.  Between 12 & 15 girls meet twice a month to discuss the books and any other topics that come up.

This year the high school girls have read Drowning Anna by Sue Mayfield, Cut by Patricia McCormick, and the Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

We also get together for a Christmas Party, a Girls Night Out party & the end of the year pizza & movie night.  We always have a great time!
